Beth's Story

Beth’s hope of being reunited with her five children gave her strength during her battle with drug addiction. Her hope became reality when she overcame her addiction and is now reunited with her family.

To assist Beth’s concern for the well-being, happiness, and future of her children, her mother and sister recommended that she call Door to Hope for help. Through Door to Hope, Beth received transitional housing as well as services through the Monterey County Screening Team for Assessment, Referral and Treatment (MCSTART). MCSTART helps children ages 0 to 5 who are exposed to alcohol and/or drugs before birth.

Beth’s children received medical care and behavioral therapy. Beth also received assistance in the process of developing Individualized Educational Plans (IEP) for future school support for her children. Weekly family therapy helped Beth learn new parenting skills and better ways to communicate with her children.

She states, “My children showed me happiness again [and] MCSTART showed me how to be a parent and be safe.” In her praise for MCSTART, Beth says she has built strong relationships with her therapist and her case manager, “They go above and beyond with their services. MCSTART has become like foster parents to my children.”

Beth now works for MCSTART and cherishes the recovery support that she received and describes herself as a “success story”.
