Eve's Story
Eve’s battle with addictions as a young mother took its toll on her family. Her sons were born alcohol exposed and Eve recalls how her addictions prevented her from adequately caring for them, “I would get frustrated and then I would take it out on them. I didn’t know how to ask for what I needed.”
Motivated to provide for the well-being of her children, Eve summoned the strength to call Door to Hope. There she received counseling, medical services and ongoing evaluations for her youngest son through the Monterey County Screening Team for Assessment Referral and Treatment (MCSTART). Door to Hope also linked Eve with safe and affordable transitional housing that she describes as “a community with people you can trust” and whose paths closely echo her own experiences.
Receiving counseling and home visiting in a supportive setting has given Eve the confidence to ask for help when she needs it. Through MCSTART, Eve also received Salinas Adult School’s Parents as Teachers (PAT) home visiting services. The PAT program helped Eve better understand her young son’s development. Eve developed a newfound confidence in her own parenting abilities.
She sees her infant now thriving stating, “The PAT program showed me how to teach him to explore things so that he learns by himself and teaches himself.” She raves about the PAT staff declaring, “The people in this program are awesome! They have a lot of love and dedication for their jobs.”
