First5MontereyHISTORY

First 5 Monterey County, also known as, as the Monterey County Children and Families Commission, was established in 1999 following the passage of Proposition 10, which added a 50 cent tax to all tobacco products.  The statewide- collected monies are earmarked for programs and services benefiting children from the prenatal stage to age 5 and their families.

First 5 Monterey County's portion of that money is based on the yearly county birthrate and is used to support programs, agencies and collaborative efforts sharing the vision that all children in Monterey County will enter school in good health, emotionally well developed and ready and able to learn.

Currently, First 5 Monterey County provides approximately $5 million each year to over 40 agencies providing support to children in the county.  Please click here for First 5 Monterey County Funded Programs
