Last month, a clear message came from the Monterey County community—early education, preschool programs, and education are top priorities. These were identified through countywide online and phone surveys and five community forums created to receive feedback about excess cannabis tax revenue.

We are fortunate to have community partners in Monterey County that know the investments in early childhood development pay dividends both now and in the future. While the needs of families with young children continue to grow, we are proud to highlight some of the recent work and activities of individuals and organizations to help our youngest children meet their unique potential.

• Three new Women's Policy Institute fellows from the Bright Beginnings Salinas Collaborative Action Team continue early childhood development work through advocacy around Preschool for All.  They are currently conducting a survey of parents' needs in Salinas. Take the Survey.

• Over 90 community members met on May 15 to launch, "Together, Preparing Every Child for Life and School: A Strategy for Monterey County to Better Support All Children and Their Families." This new strategic framework for early childhood development outlines priority strategies that will be implemented with support from Bright Beginnings and Bright Futures. Additional partners include United Way Monterey County and First 5 Monterey County. Participants shared ideas with local leaders and learned about specific projects to ensure all children in the county get the support they need to succeed. • United Way Monterey County is exploring access to quality early care and education.  The organization is looking to provide grants to centers and family child care providers who support struggling parents across the county. If you, or a child care provider you know, are interested in funding to improve facilities (classrooms, bathrooms, and/or kitchens), take the survey.

• Two early childhood advocates were honored during the LIVE UNITED awards in April. Julie Drezner was recognized for her work as a First 5 Monterey County Commissioner advocating for the young children and families of Monterey. Shannan Watkins received an award for her work with the Child Care Planning Council and for her role in the passage of AB 300 (Caballero) which is bringing local flexibility to the child care subsidy program.

It is an honor to serve as one of the catalysts developing a comprehensive system of support for our youngest children and their families. Let's Raise Monterey County Together!
